DOE Issues Stop-Work Order to American Iron and Metal Scrap Yard

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The provincial government of New Brunswick has issued a stop-work order to American Iron and Metal (AIM) scrap metal yard in Saint John, following numerous complaints by residents of series of explosions at the facility. As per the order, the Montreal-headquartered scrap metal recycler is required to shut down all of its operations at the plant with immediate effect.

Meantime, Herbert Black, CEO, AIM stated that the explosions are being mistaken and must be more accurately classified as “vibrations”. These disruptions are not caused by the company, but by the suppliers who dump heavy loads of scrap containers at the site. The company is currently working on a program to penalize suppliers who ship sealed, pressurized containers and explosive materials to the site, he added. Black had earlier held a meeting with the officials from the city and Port of Saint John.

The Department of Environment under the provincial government has asked the company to submit a detailed plan within next two months, with fruitful suggestions to eliminate the explosions and noises at the site that cause disturbance and inconvenience to neighboring residents.

According to neighbors, the scrap metal facility has been home to at least 40 blasts over the past 18 months.

Incidentally, the company’s Environment Permit is due to expire in June 2019. The facility will have to implement necessary site improvements to get the permit renewed.
