SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) under the Department of Public Services (DPS), City of Manila announced its decision to host a massive electronic waste collection drive. The event aims to address the mounting challenge of e-waste disposal and proper management.
The event, held in observance of World Environment Month, will all forms of e-waste from city households from 26th to 30th of this month at Ortega Covered Court, Mataas na Lupa, Barangay 737, Malate, Manila. Any broken, spent, obsolete, and unwanted electronic and electrical products” that require disposal can be brought to the event.
According to news release issued by the Manila DPS, accepted items include worn-out or used electronic gadgets that run on electricity like chargers, cellular phones, laptops, computer equipment, CRT monitors and TVs, electric fans, etc. However, busted lamps and batteries will not be accepted.
The DENR data cites electronic waste has emerged as the world’s fastest-growing domestic waste stream. Incidentally, the Philippines is ranked as one of Southeast Asia’s top e-waste generators, as per latest statistics published by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The country is estimated to have generated 3.9 kilograms of e-waste per capita in 2019.
