Delaware's Ban on Plastic Bags Comes Into Effect in 2021

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The House Bill that proposes ban on most single-use plastic bags in Delaware is set to take effect on 1st January, 2021. The Delaware stores will no longer be allowed to offer plastic bags to customers effective that date. It will then become the fifth state in the U.S. to enact plastic bag law.

According to the provisions of the bill, stores exceeding 7,000 square feet of retail sales space, or chain stores with at least 3,000 square feet of space will be prohibited from handing out single-use plastic bags at checkouts. The retailers who provide plastic bags for wrapping food need to implement in-store plastic bag recycling program so as to ensure that the bags are properly collected for recycling.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control had recently hosted a virtual workshop to provide details on the law and collect input from various stakeholders. A public hearing to accept public comments will be held in late October this year, said Adam Schlachter, DNREC Pollution Prevention program manager.

It must be noted that restaurants are excluded from the ban. The bags to wrap meat, fish, flowers or potted plants and bags used for live animals or chemical pesticides are also excluded from the ban.

The bill is aimed at protecting Delaware communities from litter and its environment and wildlife from the harmful effects of discarded waste.
