Crude Steel Production by Asian Countries Surged, Bucking Global Trend

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recent production data released by the World Steel Association (wordsteel) suggests modest increase in crude steel output by Asian countries during the month of September this year. The production growth by the region was led by China, whose output was up by 10.9% year-on-year.

The Asian region produced 117.997 million net tons (NT) of steel in September 2020, modestly higher by 7.4% when compared with the production during the same month a year before. The regional output had totalled only 109.885 million NT during September 2019.

The leading producer, China, accounted for almost 79% of the total regional output during the month. The Chinese output totalled 92.555 million NT. The second largest steel producer in the region was India, followed by Japan. The Indian output totalled 8.520 million NT, whereas Japan’s output dropped sharply to 6.486 million NT.

The September 2020 crude steel output by other countries in the region was as follows: South Korea (5.831 million NT), Taiwan (1.605 million NT), Vietnam (2.321 million NT), Pakistan (340,000 NT) and Thailand (340,000 NT).

The combined output by the region during the first nine months of the current year was up marginally by 0.2% year-on-year to total 1.002 billion NT. The three leading producers during Jan-Sep ‘20 were China (781.593 million NT), India (70.203 million NT) and Japan (61.208 million NT). Vietnam’s production recorded nearly 15% surge. On the other hand, crude steel output by Japan declined the most, falling by over 19%.
