Middle East Crude Steel Output Surged 30%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Middle East crude steel production recorded notable jump in the opening month of 2020, in accordance with the data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

The regional output totalled 3.841 million tonnes (Mt), higher by 29.5% when matched with the output of 2.966 Mt in January 2019. The production increases in Iran and Qatar were partially offset by reduced production by other countries in the region including Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Iran recorded the biggest jump in monthly crude steel production, registering year-on-year surge by almost 50% to total 2.895 Mt in January this year. The production had totalled only 1.971 Mt during the same month a year before. Qatar too recorded 3.9% surge in output from 221,000 tonnes to 230,000 tonnes over the year.

On the other hand, Saudi Arabia reported substantial decline in output by 12.2% from 469,000 tonnes to 412,000 tonnes over the year. The steel output by the UAE too dropped marginally by 0.3% from 304,000 tonnes to 303,000 tonnes.

The surge in output by the Middle East region outclassed the 2.1% growth in global crude steel production during the month.
