EU-28 Crude Steel Production Dipped 9%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The monthly crude steel production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests substantial decline in output by the EU-28 countries during the month of February this year.

The regional crude steel output was 12.277 million tonnes (Mt) in February 2020. This compares with the output of 13.494 Mt in the same month a year before. Year-on-year, the output witnessed a decline by approximately 9%. The combined output during Jan-Feb ’20 too was down by almost 9% year-on-year, falling from 27.459 Mt to 24.972 Mt, worldsteel report said.

The top three producers in the region were Germany, Italy and France. The German output, at 2.920 Mt, was down sharply by 12% from the prior year. The Italian output remained more or less stable at 2.046 Mt. France saw its output decline by 1.3% from 1.248 Mt in February last year to 1.232 Mt in February 2020. The other key producers in the region were Spain (710,000 tonnes), Austria (642,000 tonnes) and the Netherlands (566,000 tonnes).

On the contrary, the crude steel output by ‘Other Europe’ region comprising of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey surged higher by 7.4% from 2.913 Mt to 3.128 Mt. The Jan-Feb ’20 production too was up by 10.3%.
