CRT Stockpile at Abandoned Warehouse to be Landfilled

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The cleanup plan released by consultants for a Columbus, Ohio facility suggests that the abandoned CRT materials are likely to be landfilled instead of being recycled.

According to Ensafe report, the Olymbec USA warehouse, the formerly Closed Loop site, holds around 30 million pounds of CRT materials. Recycling of the above materials is feared to add $1.7 million to the cleanup bill, said the recent cleanup plan submitted to the Ohio Environment Protection Agency (EPA). The recycling of the materials instead of landfilling them would add 5.5 cents per pound in costs, which equates to approximately 35% increase in total project cost. The whole CRT units identified during the cleanup process may be recycled.

The report says that the warehouse facility stores nearly 22.6 million pounds of unprocessed CRTs, 7.4 million pounds of crushed CRT glass and over 900,000 pounds of crushed CRT screens and other components. The current proposal says that these materials would be disposed as RCRA hazardous waste. It also suggests decontamination of the building after removal of CRT materials, because of the likely presence of lead dust inside.
