SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA) applauded Ontario government’s decision to transition the existing residential recycling program into a producer responsibility model, as part of its efforts to address the issues of plastic pollution and litter across the province.
Jeff Yurek, Ontario’s Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks, in an announcement, made clear the intentions of the government to transition Ontario’s Blue Box residential recycling program to a producer responsibility model by 2025. Upon completion of the transition, producers of products and packaging will be fully responsible for the program costs. Consequently, municipal taxpayers will be alleviated from the tax burden.
The new system will collect full range of plastic packaging, thereby reducing the amount of plastic materials ending up at landfills.
Carol Hochu, President & CEO, CPIA extended full support to the new initiative. Further, it will result in positive economic and environmental outcomes, she added.
