Addressing a community cleanup and awareness campaign, PYN Chief Executive Alferd Sigo said that the aim of the consortium is to engage and educate community on effective plastic waste management. It aims to trigger community action to accelerate the transformation of plastic waste into valuable commodities, thus ensuring a circular plastics economy.
The cleanup event donated garbage skips to be distributed at strategic points within the region.
The efforts are aimed at improving the livelihoods of the hundreds of workers in the country’s plastic recycling sector. In addition to addressing environmental pollution, the consortium’s activities will provide employment opportunities, especially to those with physical disabilities and youths.
As per 2019 studies, the Mombasa town produces about 1,000 tonnes of solid waste every day, out of which only 60% are collected.
