SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Coca-Cola Amatil announced a new partnership with Veolia Australia to construct a new state-of-the-art plastic recycling plant in the country. The proposed plant will focus mainly on recycling of PET plastic.
The establishment of the plant is part of Coca-Cola’s commitment to boost recycled content in plastic bottles. Coca-Cola Amatil aims to produce 7 out of 10 bottles from 100% recycled plastic by the end of this year.
The project partners have formed a joint project team, which will explore the plant’s economic feasibility, size and location. Several locations across all three eastern Australian states are being explored. A final decision on the plant’s location will be announced within weeks, they said.
The plant would be built at an investment of around $45 to $50 million. It will have a processing capacity of approximately 30,000 tonnes of PET plastic per annum. The country is believed to generate nearly 80,000 tonnes of PET plastic every year, a good majority of which is currently crushed, baled and shipped to overseas countries for recycling. Once fully operational, the plant will create around 45-50 jobs.
