Aluminum Cans Recorded Unprecedented Upsurge in Demand

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Washington-headquartered Can Manufacturing Institute (CMI), in a statement, said that demand for aluminum cans peaked during the pandemic period.

The statement noted that aluminum can has the highest recycling rate among all categories of beverage packaging. There has been a visible shift from plastic bottles and other alternatives to aluminum cans, especially due to environmental concerns. The environment-friendly aluminum containers have witnessed unprecedented demand. Several craft breweries and soft drink majors have been reporting difficulties in sourcing aluminum cans for their products, CMI added.

The latest data suggests that beverage cans reported robust growth in the second quarter, although the growth was slightly less when matched with the first quarter of the current year. The can manufacturers are likely to import nearly 2 billion cans during this year from their overseas facilities in order to meet the increased customer demand. The can’s overall market share surged by 8% through March this year, said Robert Budway, President, CMI.

At least three new can manufacturing plants are under construction. The companies are reportedly adding new lines to existing plants in order to meet the rising demand.
