SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The City of Philadelphia issued a reminder, saying that ban enforcement on single-use plastic bags will begin on April 1, 2022.
The plastic bag ban was originally passed by the Philadelphia City Council in December 2019, but the implementation was delayed on account of Covid-19 pandemic. The implementation now comes after a six-month warning period for businesses. During this period, the City had carried out extensive awareness and education campaigns to help businesses prepare for the ban. Also, warnings were issued to those businesses who failed to comply with the law.
The City Council urged the businesses to make all necessary arrangements so as to avoid any financial penalties. Starting 1st April, the City will begin issuing violations which will carry financial penalties. Repeated violations may result in businesses being taken to court, with additional penalties imposed.
The ban will affect all commercial establishments of all sizes that make bags available for carry out items and for delivery. All single use plastic bags, bags made from polylactic acids created through a blown film extrusion process and paper bags that does not contain at least 40% recycled content will be banned from use.
