City of Lome, Togo to Boost E-Waste Recycling by 2025

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The non-governmental organization (NGO), “Moi Jeu Tri” announced that it intends to recycle over thousand tonnes of electronic waste from the city of Lome in Togo by 2025. The items that will be collected for recycling include old phones, computers, televisions, modems, refrigerators, microwaves and used toys. The initiative is being funded with approximately 11 million euros by the French Development Agency (AFD).

The collection will be initially done in the neighbourhoods and industrial sites. The NGO plans to recruit as many as 130 engineers in partnership with the Togolese Ministry of Primary, Secondary and Technical Education and Handicrafts, the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Togolese branch of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), who will supervise the repairing and recycling process.

The initiative will process the old electronics to safely recover lead, cadmium, mercury and palladium, thus preventing the release of toxic materials into the atmosphere, which have been identified as the major cause of environmental pollution and health problems such as cancer.

It must be noted that Togo, along with other West African countries, is a major importer of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
