China Resolves to Curtail Single-Use Plastics Consumption

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  China- the world’s biggest producer of plastic announced plans to curtail consumption of single-use plastics in the country, in a bid to address concerns with regards to rising plastic pollution across the country. The announcement to this effect was made by China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in a statement yesterday.

Accordingly, the country plans to prohibit production and use of a large number of single-use plastics by 2025. The restrictions are likely to take effect in cities, whereas smaller towns and rural areas will be given more time to comply with the restrictions.

In accordance with the NDRC plan, non-degradable plastic bags will be prohibited in supermarkets and shopping malls across major cities by the end of this year. The catering industry in major cities will be prohibited from using single-use plastic cutlery. In addition, non-degradable plastic straws will be banned across the entire nation.

The stores in large cities will not be permitted to use thin, single-use plastic bags beyond 2020. However, stores in smaller cities and villages have time until 2022 or even 2025 to phase them out. Hotels will be banned from providing single-use plastic items by the end of 2025.

As per estimates, China produces nearly 30% of the world’s plastic products. Also, the country is one of the largest plastic consumers of the world.
