The Chinese iron ore imports totaled 84.268 million tonnes in February 2018, slightly higher by 1% when compared with the imports of 83.430 million tonnes during the corresponding month in 2017.

China Iron Ore Imports Dip Slightly in February

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The trade statistics published by the Chinese General Administration of Customs indicate marginal jump in iron ore import volumes by the country during the month of February this year. Also, the country’s imports during the initial two-month period of 2018 recorded modest improvement over the previous year.

The Chinese iron ore imports totaled 84.268 million tonnes in February 2018, slightly higher by 1% when compared with the imports of 83.430 million tonnes during the corresponding month in 2017. Over 60% of the total iron ore imports by China were supplied by Australia. The imports from Australia totaled 51.387 million tonnes during the month at an average price of $69.9 per tonne. The value of imports from that country amounted to $3.592 billion. The other key exporters to China were Brazil (19.638 million tonnes) and South Africa (3.231 million tonnes).

Out of this, the imports of non-agglomerated iron ore totaled 82.463 million tonnes, representing nearly 98% of total imports. The non-agglomerated ore imports rose marginally by 1.1% during the month. The largest supplier was Australia, followed by Brazil and South Africa. The agglomerated ore imports totaled 1.805 million tonnes. India emerged as the largest supplier with 572,000 tonnes.

During the initial two months of 2018, China imported 184.611 million tonnes of steel making raw material. The imports reported 5.3% jump over the previous year. Australia (115.93 million tonnes), Brazil (39.25 million tonnes) and South Africa (7.84 million tonnes) were the top three exporters.

The imports of non-agglomerated ore totaled 180.56 million tonnes with Australia (115.65 million tonnes), Brazil (38.68 million tonnes) and South Africa (7.84 million tonnes) reporting highest volumes of export. China’s imports of agglomerated iron ore surged higher by just over 5% to 4.05 million tonnes in Jan-Feb ’18.
