China Ratifies Largest Scrap Metal Import Quota in Four Months

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Chinese administration has approved its largest scrap metal import quotas since April. The notice detailing allowance of scrap import for the fiscal was published Monday by the China Solid Waste and Chemicals Management Bureau. These imports will not fall under the restricted category of imports in accordance with the reclassification schedule which has come into force effective July 1st, 2020.

The notice states that the country has granted import quotas for 176,746 tonnes of high-grade copper scrap, 209,660 tonnes of aluminium scrap and 4,990 tonnes of steel scrap imports in 2020. This is the ninth batch of approvals for the current year and is the largest quota issued in more than three months. The newly granted quotas are expected to alleviate fears of scrap supply shortage in the country.

The quotas have been awarded to companies from Tianjin province in northern China to Guangdong province in the South.

The latest batch of import quotas brings the year-to-date approved quotas to 718,500 tonnes of copper scrap, 693,659 tonnes of aluminium scrap and 16,530 tonnes of steel scrap.

The country aims to classify scrap metal as a solid waste and aims to cut its imports to zero by end-2020, which will allow imports of high-quality copper and aluminium scrap that meet new standards.
