Casella Sued Over Alleged Water Pollution from N.H. Landfill

SEATTLE (Waste 360): The Toxics Action Center and Conservation Law Foundation are suing Casella Waste Systems over alleged water pollution from its Bethlehem Landfill in New Hampshire. The nonprofits are claiming that state water testing data reveals that the landfill has been illegally discharging pollutants like heavy metals and leachate into the Ammonoosuc River for about five years.

The groups are suing under the federal Clean Water Act in an effort to get Casella to secure a proper permit for the runoff. The groups are also seeking remediation and penalties for the environmental damage that’s been allegedly caused to the river for years.

Environmentalists are suing over alleged water pollution at a North Country landfill.

The federal lawsuit, filed Monday against landfill owner Casella, comes from the Conservation Law Foundation and Toxics Action Center.

The nonprofits say state water testing data proves Bethlehem's landfill is illegally putting heavy metals, leachate and a suspected carcinogen called 1,4 dioxane into the Ammonoosuc River.
