Canada Invests $3M in NorSask Forest Products Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Canadian Government announced its decision to invest $3 million in Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) Industrial Investments LP to modernize the indigenous-owned facility. The funding is through Resources Canada’s Indigenous Forestry Initiative. The investment will be utilized towards upgrades of NorSask Forest Products facility in northern Saskatchewan region.

Amarjeet Sohi, Natural Resource Minister stated that investments in indigenous-led businesses in forestry sector will boost job creation and economic growth in indigenous communities. The investment by NorSask facility in innovative technologies will help sustain hundreds of jobs in northwest Saskatchewan, he added.

Meantime, Richard Ben, chief of MLTC noted that the investment is a testimony of ongoing support by the federal government for forest-based economies. The investment will be used to enhance efficiency and reduce energy consumption of the largest wholly First Nations owned sawmill in Canada.

MLTC had acquired minority stake in the mill in 1987. The 100% ownership of the mill was acquired in 1998. The mill produces approximately 120 million board feet of lumber per annum, as per company website.
