Cambodia Rejects Dumped Plastic Waste from U.S. and Canada

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Southeast Asian nation of Cambodia has decided to take tough actions on shipments of contaminated waste by developed countries. It has decided to return 83 containers full of plastic trash to originating ports in the U.S. and Canada. The containers containing plastic garbage were intercepted Tuesday at the main Cambodian port of Sihanoukville.

According to spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment, the government had warned importers from bringing in plastic waste or other recyclables into the country for recycling. He reiterated that Cambodia would not like to become a dust-bin of waste from foreign countries. Out of the 83 containers, 70 were shipped from the U.S, whereas the remaining 13 were from Canada, he added. Further, the matter will be investigated by a government committee. The importing companies involved in bringing in waste to the country will be imposed hefty fines and brought to court.

Transparency International Cambodia termed the trash delivery as a serious insult and called for urgent action to prevent such occurrences in future.

Meantime, the Canadian Embassy in Cambodia has asked for further details on the illegally shipped containers.

Earlier, Philippines had returned 69 containers of Canadian plastic garbage which was illegally shipped to that country. Also, Indonesia had returned eight containers from Australia which included multiple contaminants including used cans, plastic bottles, used shoes, napkins, soft drink cans and electronic waste.
