SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) announced its decision to increase the payments for e-scrap firms towards collection and recycling of electronic items. The decision is on account of difficult market conditions and rising cost scenario. Incidentally, the crisis has led to sharp dip in covered electronic waste entering the system.
According to latest press release by CalRecycle, the combined e-scrap collection and processing rate for CRTs will be increased from 49 cents to 66 cents per pound. The rates for non-CRT devices will be increased from 60 cents to 87 cents per pound. Also, the portion of rates to collectors will be hiked from 19 cents to 26 cents per pound. The new rates will be effective starting 1st July, 2020, the press release said.
The request for rate hike was presented during CalRecycle public meeting held in May this year. The recommendation to hike payment rates was based on updated cost data submitted by e-scrap processors and processors, analysis of industry trends by staff and additional inputs by stakeholders. The price increase, approved on May 21st, will have to be filed with the Office of Administrative Law.
The state law suggests revision of payment rates every two years, if required, to cover the net costs of collection and processing.
