Call2Recycle Urges Increased Recycling Efforts on National Battery Day

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Call2Recycle, Inc., North America’s first and largest consumer battery stewardship organization has called for increased consumer battery recycling during the National battery Day falling on February 18th. The organization has launched several awareness initiatives to ensure responsible disposal and recycling of end-of-life used batteries.

As part of promoting the annual awareness day, all collection sites and partners will join hands to spread the word about ‘Lead the Charge’ campaign. To join the campaign, customers could recycle at any of the nearest Call2Recycle drop-off locations or start own battery recycling program through purchase of one of the battery recycling kits for used batteries from Call2Recycle’s online store.

According to Call2Recycle, there is still room for improvement in consumer battery recycling habits among Americans and Canadians. Research studies indicate that nearly one-third of the US communities are still unaware of battery recycling. Also, the participating rate in the country is still low at around 41%. On the other hand, although 81% of the Canadians are aware of battery recycling, only 58% actively participate in some or other recycling program.

Linda Gabor, vice president of marketing and customer service for Call2Recycle highlighted the benefits provided by batteries and the need to recycle them responsibly. Proper and safe disposal of batteries prevent release of potentially hazardous materials into the environment and result in conservation of valuable natural resources. The National Battery Day serves as a reminder that used battery recycling is an easy, year-round process, Gabor added.

During the entire year 2017, Call2Recycle had collected nearly 14 million pounds of used batteries throughout the US and Canada. Since its inception, the program has collected nearly 144 million pounds of used batteries.

Call2Recycle, Inc. is a not-for-profit, stewardship organization committed to the safe collection, transportation and recycling of consumer batteries and cell phones across Canada and the U.S.
