SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Call2Recycle- the Atlanta-headquartered non-profit organization in charge of rechargeable battery and cellphone collection announced that batteries collected for recycling witnessed significant surge in volume during the previous year.
More than 3,400 tonnes of batteries were responsibly recycled in the U.S. in 2019. The collection and recycling level hit a new milestone, surging higher by almost 5% from 2018. The rechargeable batteries collected for recycling witnessed 13% jump, by weight. The collection by participating retail sites surged higher by 7%, whereas those recovered by municipal programs skyrocketed by 18% year-on-year. The collection by retail sites and municipalities totalled 1,650 tonnes and 850 tonnes respectively.
Call2Recycle noted that over 61,500 tonnes of batteries have been recycled in the country since its launch in 1994.
Carl Smith, CEO, Call2Recycle said that recycling of lithium-ion batteries has recorded tremendous growth over the past several years. The 36% jump in collection is a positive sign that consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impacts caused by irresponsible disposal of the material.
