Call2Recycle launches all-battery recycling service in the US

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Call2Recycle-North America’s first and largest used battery stewardship and recycling organization has launched a new all-battery recycling program in the US, which is intended to collect both rechargeable and single-use batteries. The expansion of battery collection service is expected to provide big boost to the nationwide battery recycling program that Call2Recycle has developed over the past two decades.

The expanded battery recycling program now includes a new single-use battery recycling option. The service includes recycling of household batteries-both rechargeable and single-use batteries such as AA, AAA, 9v, D and button weighing less than 11 pounds throughout the US. The collection sites have been directed to opt in through the online store through purchase of boxes or through regular bulk shipments. According to Call2Recycle press release, collection of rechargeable batteries will continue to remain free-of-charge to national retailers, municipal recycling programs, and industry stewards. At the same time, nominal fees will be charged from businesses and private entities. The participating collection sites will continue to accept batteries from consumers at no charge.

Carl Smith, CEO and president of Call2Recycle noted that the new service satisfies the needs of both collection site customers and consumers. The new collection service would benefit the consumers in a big way as they need not have to classify household batteries that can and can’t be recycled. It eliminates the need for sorting of batteries for recycling. The process is expected to boost battery collection across the country, Smith said. The nationwide launch of the new collection program is expected to help the country in keeping all household batteries out of waste stream. There has been a significant increase in usage of devices powered by batteries, he reminded.

The changes to existing battery collection program offer more flexible battery recycling options. As a result, customers will be able to recycle primary batteries. In addition, Call2Recycle’s rechargeable battery recycling service will transition into a fee-based model for some customers. According to Call2Recycle, the fee-based model is being introduced to ensure long-term sustainability of its stewardship program. Further, the battery recycling program will be competitively priced so as to make it feasible for all customers. The transition to a fee-based service will impact a limited number of customers, it said. Fees will be determined based on the cost incurred to manage the collection, transportation and recycling of various battery types in respective locations.

Meantime, the new program will continue to offer no-cost battery recycling for customers through its convenient drop-off location sites. By way of recycling of all types of batteries, Call2Recycle aims to become one-stop shop for recycling batteries.

Call2Recycle, Inc. is a not-for-profit, stewardship organization committed to the safe collection, transportation and recycling of consumer batteries and cellphones across Canada (Call2Recycle Canada, Inc.) and the U.S. Founded in 1994, the organization works on behalf of stakeholders to protect and preserve the environment by providing its battery and cellphone recycling program.
