British Steel Suspends Operations at Teesside Plant for Three Weeks

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): British Steel announced that one of its plants on Teesside will be out of production for a period of three weeks. This is the second time that the company has temporarily stopped production at the plant. It must be noted that the plant had returned to operation in end-April after temporary halt for a period of three weeks.

According to company press release, it is working hard to overcome the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic on its businesses and customers. The trading conditions continue to remain challenging. The crisis situation has been posing challenges to products manufactured by its Special Profiles business in Skinningrove.

The temporary halt in production will commence on Saturday, June 13. Around 300 people working at the site will be furloughed for three weeks. Meantime, a few employees will remain on site. British Steel will constantly evaluate market conditions and decide on resumption of production at the facility at the earliest, said the company spokesperson.

The company admitted that it is a worrying time for staff. Further, it thanked all its employees for their continued commitment and dedication in safely fulfilling customer orders and supporting the UK’s economic recovery. It also thanked the customers, suppliers, contractors, trade union colleagues and the government, for their valuable support.
