SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): British Steel announced that it has won a multi-million pound contract towards supply of rail for Green Line in Egypt. As per contract, a total of 9,500 tonnes of track, produced in the company’s Scunthorpe facility, will be delivered to the North African rail project. British Steel will supply 60E1 in grade R260, each at 18 metres in length.
The company press release noted that British Steel is one among the key suppliers providing rail to the project, which is being managed by Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors Joint Venture.
The landmark railway line is the country’s first fully electrified mainline and freight network. It is 660 kilometers in length, extending from the Red Sea all the way to the Mediterranean. It will carry both passengers and goods.
Commenting on the development, Jerome Bonef, Commercial Manager Export – Rail at British Steel noted that the company is delighted to have been awarded the project and to be part of a transformational project which is expected to deliver significant improvements to Egypt’s transport network.
British Steel will transport two shipments of rail from its manufacturing facility to the north Egyptian port of Alexandria this month and in June.
