Boost in E-Commerce Trade Benefited Paper and Pulp Industry

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The rising popularity of e-commerce transactions on account of travel restrictions induced by Covid-19 has been a major change in trend witnessed during the previous year. The change in shopping habits has proved beneficial to the entire paper and pulp industry.

The surge in e-commerce trade has not only boosted the demand for paper and packaging materials, but also has brought about significant changes to recycling norms. U.S. paperboard producers are seen increasingly making use of recycled catalogues, boxes and newspaper in manufacturing new paper products. Many mills in the country use recycled catalogues, boxes and newspaper to make variety of new products including toilet paper, coffee cups, paper towels etc.

The rise in e-commerce boxes mixed into curbside recycling bins has led to better mixed paper quality, which in turn has prompted many mills to accept curbside recycling programs. The mixed paper from recycling programs has become a substitute even for the discarded office paper. The main constituent of paper entering the recycling plants from households is corrugated cardboard.

The expected further rise in e-commerce orders in 2021 is likely to provide further boost to mixed paper prices.
