BMC Aims to Achieve 100% Scientific Disposal of E-Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) targets to achieve 100% scientific disposal of e-waste. By doing so, it aims to become the first state capital city to reach the important milestone. The move is part of city's efforts to improve cleanliness and hygiene.

According to Rajesh Rathore, Additional Commissioner, BMC, it is highly important to separate electronic waste from daily domestic waste. The improper storage or disposal of e-waste could result in serious health and environmental impacts, due to release of toxic elements into the environment, he noted.

In order to provide much needed boost to e-waste recycling, the BMC has set up a core team at B-Nest Bhopal- Central India's Incubation Hub. Initially, the civic body will focus on collection of dry and wet waste. Separate bin for collection of electronic waste will be introduced at select centres across the city soon, said BMC press release.

Incidentally, Bhopal City generates nearly 250 metric tonnes of electronic waste every year. As per statistics published by the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB), nearly 347 MT of e-waste was scientifically disposed across the entire state in 2018. The state E-Waste Management Rules state that all electronic waste must be disposed of through scientific methods through recyclers authorized by the State or Central Pollution Control Boards.
