Biffa Advocates Total Ban on Plastic Waste Exports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): High Wycombe, UK-headquartered integrated waste management company, Biffa plc, has called for a ban on exports of plastic waste from the country. According to them, this move will help to boost domestic plastics recycling in the UK.

The ban on exports would lead to retention of the material as a resource, instead of the exported materials ending up causing environmental harm in destination countries. Further, this will generate investment and create jobs in the country, Biffa noted.

According to Michael Topham, chief executive of Biffa, a total ban on exports of unprocessed plastic waste will ensure that plastics are dealt with in a sustainable manner. In addition, such a move would restore confidence in the domestic waste and recycling systems. The safe handling of plastic waste will ensure supply of raw materials for the UK circular economy, in addition to supporting investment and jobs, Topham added.

In addition to ending plastic waste exports, Biffa also calls for phasing out problem plastics and making recycling easier. It noted that the existing Packaging Producer Responsibility (PRN) system needs urgent fix by incorporating higher compliance fees for non-recyclable or difficult to recycle plastics. Also, Biffa warned that alternatives to plastics are likely to cause more damage to environment than plastics.
