Bay Area Appliance Recycler Fined $146K on Alleged Mishandling of Hazardous Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Freon Free- a Bay Area appliance recycler has been ordered to pay a penalty of $145,760 on charges of mishandling of hazardous waste. The company has reached an agreement with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to pay the above penalty amount.

According to DTSC, the company was cited for burning hazardous waste without possessing a permit, during its investigation. Also, it noted that the company was involved in improper treatment of ammonia-containing refrigerators, violating legal requirements and posing serious injury threats to workers. The onsite inspections were conducted at Freon Free locations in Fairfield, American Canyon and Orland, California.

It must be noted that the California law stipulates that recyclers of major appliances containing materials requiring special handling (MRSH) must meet certification requirements and follow the laws as approved by the DTSC’s Certified Appliance Recycler Program, so as to prevent release of dangerous components to environment.

As per the settlement, Freon Free shall pay an initial sum of $29,152. Further, the company has to make four biannual payments of $29,152 each on the first day of the month for the next 24 months.
