Battery Resources, Honda Partners in Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Project

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Worcester, Massachusetts-based lithium-ion battery recycling and manufacturing company Battery Resources signed an agreement with American Honda Motor Co. to recycle Honda and Acura electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

As per the agreement, the partnership will take care of disassembly and recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries from the automaker's electric vehicles in the U.S. Initially, the end-of-life batteries will be processed at the company’s Worcester site. The processing will be shifted to the proposed new commercial-scale plant, which is expected to become operational by spring 2022. Upon full operations, that plant will have a capacity to process more than 20 million pounds of batteries.

Mike O’Kronley, CEO, Battery Resources noted that the company is proud to work with sustainably minded companies like Honda in revolutionizing the lithium-ion supply chain and building a more sustainable future. The partnership will ensure safe, convenient and environmentally responsible recycling solutions at an affordable cost.

The company’s industry-leading processes deliver up to 97% metal recovery. It turns spent batteries and production scrap directly into new, battery-ready cathode active material, thereby achieving significant reduction in cost, emissions and energy use.

The recycling of used li-ion batteries has been a significant challenge not only for car manufacturers, but also for battery makers.
