SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Seattle, Washington-based Basel Action Network (BAN) announced publication of the latest e-Stewards certification standard. The Version 4.0 of the “Standard for Ethical and Responsible Reuse, Recycling and Disposition of Electronic Equipment and Information Technology” was released on Feb 25th.
The non-governmental organization had previously released drafts of the updated standard for public and industry comment. The drafts were compiled with the help of experts in recycling, toxic waste and occupational health and safety. According to BAN, the previous version 3.1 of the standard will be valid only until August 24, 2021. Thereafter, all certified recycling facilities will have to meet the requirements specified in the new version.

The new version of the standard differs from the previous version in that it has been streamlined and made simpler to read and to implement, while not compromising on core rigour and principles. The new version requires two other separate standards- the global environmental management system standard created by the International Standards Organization, ISO 14001 and the NAID AAA certification standard.
Jim Puckett, executive director, BAN noted that the revision process was smooth and very constructive. The standard has become more rigorous in various areas including human health, export controls and data security, he added.
