Aurubis Collaborates with SMS in New Multimetal Recycling Plant Project

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Aurubis AG signed new contract with Dusseldorf-based SMS Group towards construction of a multimetal recycling plant in the U.S. The construction of the Richmond County recycling plant is expected to start by mid-2022. The plant will have an annual processing capacity of 90,000 tonnes. Moreover, it is expected to create over 100 jobs in the region.

As per the agreement, the SMS Group will plan the facility concept, deliver and implement it on site. In addition, it will deliver the technology for the top-blown rotary converter (TBRC) for processing complex recycling materials to recover copper, nickel, tin, zinc, precious metals, and platinum group metals. The delivery also covers the sampling and off-gas cleaning facilities.

The long term contract between the partners also calls for planning, construction, and development of additional modular recycling facilities in Europe and North America. Hence, the Richmond facility is considered as the starting point of this partnership in the multimetal recycling sector.

The construction of the facility is expected to help Aurubis tap the market with strong growth potential and expand its network of integrated smelter facilities. Apart from that, it will also contribute significantly to its ambitious sustainability targets.
