SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): A new contract with Athens Services for residential trash collection in Oak Park and unincorporated areas of Simi Valley and Moorpark goes into effect January 2. Ventura County awarded Athens a 10-year-contract for waste and recycling collection in the county’s southeast residential service area following a competitive bidding process earlier in the year.
The City of Thousand Oaks signed a multimillion-dollar, 15-year waste-hauling and recycling contract with Athens in 2021, a deal that’s expected to save customers an estimated $70-million over the life of the contract. Thousand Oaks and Santa Paula became the first cities in Ventura County to offer citywide organics recycling services as required by Senate Bill 1383. Both cities are serviced by Athens. The bill went into effect Jan. 1, 2022 and requires all green waste, including food waste and wrappers, to go into a green bin for composting. The goal is to reduce methane emission from landfills that are produced by rotting plant matter.
“Bundled services, consisting of dedicated containers for trash, recycling, and organics waste, will enable residents to participate in source-separation in an economical and environmentally sustainable manner,” Athens said. The Athens contract includes parcels of unincorporated land situated within Simi Valley city limits. In October 2022, the Simi City Council unanimously approved renewing its long-standing franchise agreement with WM rather than seek bids from other waste disposal companies. The agreement between the city and WM runs for 11 years until Dec. 31, 2033. In January, the new Ventura County residents serviced by Athens will be provided with new Athens-branded containers.
