Apple Lawsuit Claimed $30 Million in Damages From GEEP Canada

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Canadian court records have provided additional details about the lawsuit filed by Apple against GEEP Canada over alleged reselling of devices that were originally meant for recycling. Instead of destroying, GEEP is believed to have resold at least 10,000 devices, in violation of the contract agreement earlier reached between the two parties.

Apple recorded the serial numbers of all devices shipped to GEEP during the period from January 2015 to December 2017. An audit conducted by the company revealed that nearly 10,000 devices were misappropriated and sold to third parties. These devices were then fixed, passed off as functioning Apple devices and resold in grey markets, especially in China.

The devices were moved by GEEP employees to areas of the processing facility, which didn’t fall under the surveillance of closed-circuit television cameras. The employees manipulated books and records to account for the weight of the devices, the lawsuit alleged. According to Apple’s claim, it has lost approximately CAD$30 million in damages.

However, GEEP Canada said that three former employees were responsible for the damages. Furthermore, it took immediate action by boosting security monitoring at the site and installing additional recording devices. Furthermore, the company has launched its own investigation into the alleged act.
