SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alcoa Corporation welcomed decisions by the Western Australian (WA) government that will allow the company to continue with bauxite mining and downstream alumina refining in the State.
The WA government had announced that the 2023-2027 Mining and Management Program (MMP)- Alcoa’s latest five-year mine plan for Huntly and Willowdale bauxite mines will be approved soon. It must be noted that the MMP supports mining at Myara and Larego regions at its Huntly and Willowdale mines.
In addition the government had exempted the company by allowing it to continue mining operations, if a separate environmental impact assessment is carried out by the WA Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
The company has committed to modernize the State Agreements and the approvals framework for its two bauxite mines and three alumina refineries. Earlier, it had decided to forgo mining around the forest towns of Dwellingup and Jarrahdale as part of ensuring protection of lifestyle.
Matt Reed, Alcoa Vice President Operations for Australia noted that the company is committed to operate in line with the new government regulations and evolving community expectations.
