Alcoa Technology Released Roadmap to Reinvent Aluminum Industry

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alcoa Corporation announced technology roadmap in support of the company’s vision to reinvent the aluminum industry for a sustainable future. The roadmap comprises of technologies capable to deliver decarbonisation of aluminum supply chain. Also, it is in support of Alcoa’s ambition to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 across its global operations.

It includes three main programs- The Refinery of the Future, the ASTRAEA metal purification process and the ELYSIS joint venture technology.

The Refinery of the Future aims to reduce the capital cost of developing a refinery and enable decarbonization of the alumina refining process. The ASTRAEA metal purification process enables recycling of post-consumer, aluminum scrap into high-purity aluminum. Meantime, the breakthrough ELYSIS joint venture technology eliminates all greenhouse gases from the traditional smelting process by making use of next-generation electrode design.

Roy Harvey, President and CEO, Alcoa Corporation noted that the roadmap represents an array of next-generation solutions that could lead to significant reduction in emissions, alongside reducing costs and improving efficiency in the aluminum production process. It will help create a better future for tomorrow, he added.
