AK Steel Receives DOE Award for Advancing Hot Rolling Steel Research

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): West Chester, Ohio- headquartered AK Steel received an award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) High Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) Program. The $300,000 award is intended to support the collaborative research by AK Steel researchers by making use of the DOE National Laboratory’s advanced computing resources. The research aims to boost innovative techniques in steel manufacturing process.

The research team comprising of researchers from AK Steel and scientists from the Computational Engineering Division of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory will work towards building a Fast Acting Reduced Ordered Model (FA-ROM), aimed at predicting the properties of finished steel coil after hot rolling. This in turn, is expected to save significant amount of time, money and energy by reducing expensive industrial trials. The research is also intended to complement the AI model currently used by AK Steel in the manufacture of innovative steel products.

Roger K. Newport, Chief Executive Officer of AK Steel stated that the award will ensure further collaboration with the DOE through the use of its supercomputing facility to foster production of high quality steel.

This is the third consecutive award that AK Steel has received from the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Advanced Manufacturing Office. It had received awards in 2017 and 2018 as well.
