AISI Reported 3% Surge in YTD Raw Steel Output

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel output posted marginal increase during the week ending on October 19, 2019 over the prior week. This is in accordance with the latest weekly production statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). However, the weekly production reported decline when compared with the corresponding week a year before.

The U.S. domestic raw steel production in the week ending on October 19, 2019 totalled 1.841 million net tons (NT) at a capability utilization rate of 79.6%. It must be noted that the production had totalled 1.877 million NT at a much higher capacity utilization rate of 80.1% during the similar week in 2018. Meantime, the production during the week increased marginally by 1.1% when compared with the production of 1.821 million NT in the week ending October 12, 2019. The capacity utilization rate then was 78.7%.

The adjusted year-to-date raw steel production by the country through the week ended October 19, 2019 was 77.919 million NT. The production during this period was higher by 2.8% upon comparison with the previous year. The capability utilization edged higher year-on-year to 80.3%. In accordance with AISI data, the production had totalled only 75.817 million NT during the corresponding year-to-date period in 2018.

The primary producer was the Great Lakes region, with a production of 706,000 NT. The region accounted for over 38% of the total U.S. weekly crude steel output. In second place was Southern region with 699,000 NT of production, followed by North East region, whose production totalled 205,000 NT.
