U.S. Raw Steel Production Witnessed Marginal Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel output reported marginal increase during the week ended on July 20, 2019 over the previous week. This is with reference to the latest weekly production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Meantime, the weekly production recorded slight increase, upon comparison with the week before that.

The U.S. domestic raw steel production in the week ended July 20, 2019 totaled 1.872 million net tons (NT), at a capability utilization rate of 80.4%. The production had totaled only 1.838 million NT at much lower capacity utilization rate of 78.4% during the corresponding week last year. Meantime, the raw steel production during the week edged higher by 1.1% when compared with the prior week production of 1.867 million NT.

The adjusted year-to-date raw steel production by the U.S. totaled 54.197 million NT through the week ended July 20, 2019 at a capacity utilization rate of 81.1%. AISI reported 5.0% jump in production over the previous year. The mill capability utilization rate too recorded notable jump. As per AISI data, the production had totaled only 51.593 million NT at a capability utilization rate of 77.0% during the corresponding year-to-date period in 2018.

The primary producer was the Southern region, which produced nearly 697,000 NT of crude steel. The production by the region accounted for just over 37% of the total U.S. weekly production. The production by the other regions in thousands of net tons is as follows: North East-205, Midwest-204, Great Lakes-685 and Western-81.
