AISI: Steel Imports Surged 35% Till September

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The total steel imports stood at 23.806 million net tons during the initial nine months of the current year, as per the most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data published by the U.S. Commerce Department. This is significantly higher by 34.9% when compared with the imports during the corresponding period in 2020. The finished steel imports too were up by almost 35% over the previous year to total 16.684 million net tons through September this year.

The finished steel product that reported highest surge in import volumes was line pipes, whose imports during Jan-Sep ’21 recorded nearly 111% year-on-year surge. The imports of reinforcing bars and cut lengths plates too were up by 70% and 44% respectively. The other products with large increases in imports were wire rods and tin plates, whose imports surged higher by 33% and 27% respectively, said the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Through the initial nine-month period in 2021, South Korea was the largest offshore supplier of steel to the U.S. The supplies from that country were up by 38% from the same period last year to total 2.095 million net tons. The second largest supplier was Japan, followed by Turkey, Germany and Taiwan.

The total and finished steel imports totalled 3.237 million net tons and 2.469 million net tons during the month of September 2021.
