AISI Report Tells of Robust Capacity Utilization at U.S. Steel Mills

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly domestic raw steel production data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) signalled significant surge in output during the week ended November 27, 2021. The weekly production climbed higher significantly by 13.3% over the previous year.

The raw steel output by the U.S. mills totalled 1.837 million net tons (NT) at a capability utilization rate of 83.2%. The production had totalled only 1.621 million NT at a capacity utilization rate of 73.3% during the same period a year before. Meantime, the production during the week recorded marginal decline by 1.3% when compared with the production of 1.861 million NT at a capability utilization rate of 84.3% during the prior week.

U.S. Steel Shipments Surged Year-on-Year

The adjusted year-to-date raw steel production totalled 86.274 million NT until the week ending November 27, 2021. The mills in the country reported capability utilization rate of 81.6% during this period. The production till date has increased by 19.7% from 72.053 million NT during the same period last year. The capability utilization rates too were up from 67.7% a year before.

The mills in the Southern region accounted for approximately 42% of the total weekly raw steel production by the country. The regional output totalled 768,000 NT. The production (in thousand net tons) by the other regions was as follows: North East-170, Midwest-199, Great Lakes-625 and Western-75.
