AISI Records 8% Surge in U.S. Raw Steel Production

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly raw steel production statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) denotes significant surge in domestic output by the U.S. mills during the week ending April 13, 2019. This is upon comparison with the corresponding week a year before. On the other hand, production reported marginal decline over the week prior to that.

According to AISI statistics based on weekly production tonnage provided by U.S. steel mills, the raw steel production totaled 1.915 million net tons during the week ending on April 13, 2019, at a capability utilization rate of 82.3%. The weekly production edged lower by 0.7% when compared with the prior week. The previous week production had totaled 1.928 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 82.8%. The weekly production represented 7.6% surge over the previous year. It must be noted that the output had totaled only 1.780 million net tons during the year-ago week. The capability utilization rate then was 76.0%.

The year-to-date production through April 13, 2019 totaled 28.051 million net tons, higher by 6.8% upon comparison with the production of 26.253 million net tons during the corresponding period in 2018. The capability utilization rate surged higher significantly from 76.4% to 81.9% over the year.

The production in the Southern district totaled 748,000 net tons, accounting for more than 39% of the total weekly production. The other primary regions along with their output are as follows: North East (184,000 tons), Midwest (183,000 tons), Great Lakes (725,000 tons) and Western (75,000 tons).
