AISI Announces Dip in Weekly Raw Steel Output Tonnage

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) released its new report outlining raw steel production tonnage for the most recent week. The figures indicate ongoing decline in production, compared with the prior week and the corresponding week during the prior year.

The U.S. raw steel production amounted to 1.899 million net tons during the week ended February 8, 2020. The production represents marginal decline by less than 1%, upon comparison with 1.917 million net tons production during the week ended February 8 in 2019. Also, the production represented 0.8% decline over the prior week. The production had totalled 1.914 million net tons in the week ended February 1, 2020.

The steel mill capability utilization rate during the week was 81.4%. This compares with 82.1% in the prior week and 82.4% in the corresponding year-ago week.

The year-to-date production totalled 10.668 million net tons, marginally higher by 1.8% from 10.478 million net tons during the period until February 8 in 2019. The capability utilization rate recorded slight increase from 81.3% to 82.1%.

By region, Great Lakes produced 689,000 net tons of steel, accounting for over 36% of total U.S. output. The output (in thousands of net tons) by other regions is as follows: North East (231), Midwest (201), Southern (703) and Western (75).
