AF&PA: U.S. Containerboard Production Flat in December 2018

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) announced the U.S packaging paper export statistics for the month of December 2018.

The total boxboard production registered marginal increase by 0.6%, upon comparison with December 2017. The recycled boxboard production has declined marginally by 1.8% during the month. On the other hand, the U.S. containerboard production was essentially flat over the previous year. The production for export tumbled by 11%. The year-to-date production climbed higher marginally by 1.7%, said AF&PA monthly figures.

The U.S. printing-writing paper shipments recorded sharp decline by 7% in December 2018, as compared with the same month in 2017. The printing-writing paper inventory levels increased over the prior month. The shipments of coated mechanical paper decreased 4% year-over-year in December last year. The shipments of coated free sheet papers registered decline of 6% in 2018. Meantime, purchases decreased by 3% for the year. The U.S. purchases of uncoated free sheet paper too were down by 6%.

The U.S. packaging paper shipments witnessed decline by nearly 8% in December last year, as compared with the year before that. However, the cumulative shipments during Jan-Dec ’18 were up by 1.8%. Multiwall shipments recorded a dip of 1.4%. The bag & sack shipments and food wrapping shipments were up by 4.4% and 1.9% year-on-year. Meantime, the converting shipments too were up slightly by 0.5%.
