AF&PA Publishes Paper Statistics for Oct '19

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. containerboard production in October this year remained essentially flat when compared with the same month a year before. The year-to-date production witnessed a decline of 4%. The containerboard operating rate was 94.7%, slightly lower from the year-ago month. The mill inventories at end-October reported a decline of 26,000 short tons from the prior month. The containerboard production for export witnessed notable surge by 4% in October this year.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its U.S. Boxboard Report for October 2019. According to the report, the total monthly U.S. boxboard production increased by 3%, compared to October 2018. The total boxboard operating rate was 91.7% for October this year.

The production of solid bleached boxboard and liner was up 7% in October. However, the year-to-date production during the initial ten-month period of the current year remained essentially flat. Also, recycled boxboard production dropped marginally by 1% during the month. On the contrary, the unbleached kraft and gypsum production surged higher by 3% over the year in Oct ’19.

As per AF&PA estimates, the packaging paper shipments by the U.S. were down by 3.4% year-on-year in October this year. The year-to-date shipments were down by 5.4%. The operating rate declined to 89.9%. The packaging paper inventory levels were down by 6,000 short tons from the prior month. Meantime, the total printing-writing paper shipments tumbled by 10%.
