SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) released its latest Packaging Paper and Printing-Writing Paper Monthly Report.
The report suggests significant rise in total shipments of packaging papers and specialty packaging. Shipments in December 2024 were 13% higher than the same month the year before. According to the Association, shipments rose by 12% over the course of the previous year.
For unbleached packaging papers, AF&PA recorded an operational rate of 87.5% in December of last year, up 12.5 points from December 2023. Meanwhile, food wrapping shipments were 23,600 short tons in December of last year, down 0.6% from the same month the previous year and down 0.5% so far this year.
According to the AF&PA Printing-Writing Monthly Report for December 2024, shipments of printing-writing paper rose by 3% in December 2024 over the same month the year before. When compared to November 2024 levels, the overall inventory levels of writing and printing paper stayed virtually unchanged.
US net imports of uncoated free sheets rose 17% over the course of the preceding year. Additionally, there was a 60% increase in net imports of coated free sheets. Shipments of mechanical papers, however, only slightly grew by 1% in 2024.
Approximately 87% of the pulp, paper, paper-based packaging, and tissue goods produced in the United States are produced by AF&PA members.
