Adidas Commits to Using Only Recycled Plastics by 2024

SEATTLE (Waste 360): Adding to its effort to increase the sustainability of its supply chain, Adidas has committed to using only recycled polyester in all its shoes and clothing by 2024. Currently, about 50 percent of the material used in a number of Adidas’ products is virgin polyester.

Adidas’ announcement builds on its moves to use more recycled material in its products. In 2016, the brand made a running shoe made from recycled water bottles, and in 2012, the brand’s uniforms for volunteers at the Olympic Games in London were made from reused water bottles.

Adidas is planning to use only recycled polyester in all its shoes and clothing within the next six years in a push to increase the sustainability of its supply chain.

The shift would see the world’s second largest sportswear brand, which launched the first mass-produced running shoe made from recycled water bottles in 2016, target 5m in sales of recycled footwear this year and 11m in 2019.

Last year, it sold 1m pairs of its recycled Ultraboost Uncaged Parley trainer, which are currently offered at €179.95 on Adidas’s German online site.
