International Gold Smuggling Racket Busted by DRI

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  A major racket behind smuggling of gold from Myanmar into the country was busted by India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials. Six people belonging to the racket were arrested by officials in the Northeastern state of West Bengal. Over 24 kilograms of smuggled gold of foreign origin, worth nearly INR 8 crores, were seized from them.

According to DRI, the arrest took place while the bus from Manipur to Siliguri, by which the smugglers were travelling, was intercepted by DRI Siliguri regional unit. The gold was smuggled into the country from Myanmar through the border at Moreh in Manipur and was being transported to Siliguri for sale. All the six people are from the state of Manipur. The sized gold included 20 pieces of gold bars, each weighing one kilogram each and 25 pieces of gold biscuits, each weighing 166 grams each.

As per DRI, 46 gold seizure cases were reported during the previous financial year, involving smuggled gold from neighboring countries including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan and China. Nearly 464 kilograms of gold, worth approximately INR 145.69 crores were seized during these operations.

In two separate cases registered by Customs officials at the Chennai International Airport, Air Intelligence (AI) unit officers seized around 383 grams of gold worth around INR 12.7 lakh. The gold was found concealed in bluetooth speakers, hair dryers, hair straighteners and wrist watches.
