In 1980 Reynolds Metals honored a commitment they made to build a recycling center wherever there was a Reynolds can manufacturing facility. What many people do not realize is that Hawaii’s recycling plant was opened ahead of schedule thanks to the efforts of a prominent leader in Hawaii’s beverage industry and a tireless environmental advocate who helped make Hawaii a cleaner and greener place.

The late Ed Doty, President of Eagle Distributors, and the late Betty Crocker, head the Outdoor Circle, shared a vision of a cleaner Hawaii and convinced Reynolds Metals that their recycling operations were needed immediately.

In 1981, Reynolds Metals opened up its Halawa processing plant with just a handful of employees accepting various forms of aluminum. In 1997, Tomra purchased Reynolds Metals and due to shifts in the industry, sold the company to local investors in 2002. Over the course of its history, Reynolds has recycled over 3 billion aluminum cans and has paid out over $3 million to Hawaii schools for their recycling efforts.

Now in its 34th year, Reynolds has over 120 employees. Since the January 2005 start of the beverage container deposit program, Reynolds has been redeeming aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, steel and bi-metal cans at the State’s largest certified redemption center network.  Currently we are operating at 40 locations statewide, and process over one million transactions a year.

The next quarter century is looking bright for Reynolds Recycling, with plans underway to expand recycling services to additional sites statewide. In 2015 we are working to open more new sites on Oahu.   Reynolds Recycling is committed to protecting Hawaii’s future by recycling today, and remains invested in the community that opened its arms to recycling so many years ago.

Who We Help:

Reynolds Recycling currently works with the following nonprofit organizations and schools, and the list grows and grows each day. Here are just a few of the ways recycling is helping Hawaii:

• American Cancer Society, Pacific Headquarters: To support fundraising efforts of the ACS Corporate Relay Team. Money raised is donated under the team’s name. 
  
  
• Big Brothers Big Sisters: Supports mentoring programs focused on helping children grow into responsible adults by providing them one-to-one with volunteer mentors who create a positive, lasting impact by sharing their guidance and support. 
  
  
• Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii: To assist with operational expenses at their Spalding Clubhouse. 
  
  
• Castle High School Athletics: Maintenance of facilities is an ongoing challenge as DOE funding cannot keep up with the need. The primary use of the monies raised will be to upgrade and upkeep athletic and school facilities. Priority will be given to areas of safety. 
  
  
• Farrington HS Athletics/Governor's Athletic Club: Funds are used for transportation for our athletic teams. 
  
  
• Hawaii Nature Center: Funds raised go towards the support of our educational programs.
  
  
• Hawaii Pacific Tennis Association: To support their programs and services.
  
  
• Hawaiian Humane Society
  
  
• Hawaiian Island Twisters: Purchase additional equipment for recreational 
  gymnastics programs. 
  
  
• Hongwanji Mission School: To help pay for their 8th Grade Trip to Japan. 
  
  
• Kahaluu Elementary School: To fund important programs and services in light of funding cutbacks. 
  
  
• Kailua HS Athletics: To help fund Project Graduation 
  
  
• Kaimuki HS Athletics: To pay for expenses related to the athletic program. 
  
  
• Kalaheo HS Athletics: To supplement the athletic budget, which is constantly subject to cuts in funding. Funds raised will go towards such expenses as bus transportation. 
  
  
• Kamaaina Kids: Preschool scholarships and equipment 
  
  
• Kaneohe Elementary School: To fund important programs and services. 
  
  
• Kapolei HS Project Graduation: To help pay for Project Graduation expenses
  
  
• Kapunahala School: To fund important programs and services. 
  
  
• KCAA Preschools: Tuition Assistance Program for Qualified Families 
  
  
• KEY Project: To support their community programs and services in the Kahaluu area. 
  
  
• KHIB (Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful):  Local affiliate of KAB (Keep America Beautiful), the nation's largest volunteer-based community action and education organization.  Their mission is to encourage people to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments and preserving the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands.
  
  
• KEY Project: To support their community programs and services in the Kahaluu area.
  
  
• Koko Head Elementary School: Pays for Physical Education teacher, provides funds for Hawaii Opera Theatre’s Artist in the Schools Program, and allows the association to provide teachers with stipends for schools supplies at the beginning of the year.
  
  
• Lanakila Rehab Center: To help pay for client activities. 
  
  
• McKinley High School Athletics: To help with transportation costs for teams to travel to their games. 
  
  
• Mililani HS Athletics: Monies used to provide extra security at football games, transportation costs, supplies, and equipment. 
  
  
• Nanakuli HS Athletics: To pay for expenses related to their athletic program. 
  
  
• National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii: Funds used to prevent kidney and urinary tract disease, improve the health and well being of individuals and families affected by the disease, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation in Hawaii. 
  
  
• Niu Valley Intermediate School: Purchase supplies and other items needed for student activities and multimedia equipment and training for students. Also funds field trips. 
  
  
• Our Lady of Good Counsel School: To pay for important programs and services. 
  
  
• Outdoor Circle: To pay for important programs and services. 
  
  
• Pacific and Asian Affairs Council (PAAC): Provide additional funding for global education programs 
  
  
• PACT Economic Development Center: Support job training/placement programs including, but not limited to staffing, bus passes & employment needs for clients (such as shoes and uniforms). 
  
  
• Radford Athletic Boosters: Pay for transportation costs and day to day operations. 
  
  
• Roosevelt HS Band: To pay for expenses related to their band program.  Seagull Schools: Purchasing school supplies and playground equipment. 
  
  
• Special Olympics: To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. 
  
  
• St. Anthony School: 4th Grade Field Trip to the Big Island 
  
  
• Team Hawaii (NKFH): To pay for expenses relating to Team Hawaii’s participation in the 2006 U.S. Transplant Games
