Hamilton recycling company charged after scrap metal spill

The company is to appear in court on Jan. 7, 2026.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A Hamilton-based recycling company is facing a Highway Traffic Act charge after a trailer load of scrap metal overturned last month on Trunk Road.

In a charge filed in Provincial Offences Court on Nov. 26, American Iron and Metal Company Inc. was charged for operating a vehicle while the load was not loaded, bound, secured, contained or covered so that no portion of the load may become dislodged, fall, leak, spill or blow from the vehicle.

The charge was filed by the Ministry of Transportation under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). It has not been tested in court and the company is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

The company is to appear in court on Jan. 7, 2026.

The load of scrap metal was being carried in a truck on Nov. 17 when the trailer overturned on Trunk Road at Capp Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie.

Debris poured on to the road and sidewalk, with metal damaging some vehicles in the adjacent parking lot.
